What is Obesity?

Obesity is a long-term (chronic) medical condition where the body has too much fat stored. It is not just about appearance — obesity can affect your health in many different ways. Doctors today recognize obesity as a complex disease, influenced by many factors such as genetics, diet, physical activity, stress, sleep, and even certain medications.

How is Obesity Measured?

The most common tool is the Body Mass Index (BMI).

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters squared).

For adults:

A BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight.

A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obesity.

Other measures, such as waist circumference, can also give important information about health risks, since fat stored around the waist can increase the risk of certain diseases.

Why Does Obesity Matter?

Carrying extra weight, especially over a long time, increases the risk of:

Type 2 diabetes

High blood pressure and heart disease

Stroke

Certain types of cancer

Liver and kidney problems

Joint and mobility issues

The Good News

Even small amounts of weight loss — as little as 5–10% of your body weight — can improve blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, lowering the risk of serious disease.

Treatment and Support

Obesity is not simply about willpower. It is a complex condition that often requires professional help. Safe and effective treatment options include:

Guidance on nutrition and physical activity

Support for sleep and stress management

Medical treatments (including medications, if needed)

Long-term follow-up and care

Key Message: Obesity is a treatable medical condition. With the right support, many people succeed in reaching healthier weight levels and improving their quality of life. You are not alone — help is available.
